Model SIM-2A Powerline Disturbance Simulator Description The model SIM-2A is rated for ac loads of up to 15 amps at 115 or 230 Vac, 47-63 Hz single phase. The simulator is designed to operate in conjunction with an external adjustable or fixed-wound transformer to produce line voltage surges, sags and dropouts ranging from 0.5 to 500 cycles (periods) in length. A thumbwheel switch selects the fault duration in half-cycle increments. Up to 10 milliseconds of time delay can be added before and after the selected fault, enabling the test operator to generate compound faults, such as a double dropout, or compensate for load power factor when driving inductive loads. Each SIM-2A is furnished with an accessory power cord for connection to a standard adjustable transformer (not included), which serves as an external voltage source for tests requiring amplitude fluctuations. The external voltage level may be varied from zero up to 300 Vac maximum, and can be applied in either the transient or standby modes. The standard version of the SIM-2A is factory wired for 115 Vac operation, uses NEMA 5-15 electrical connectors, and is internally strappable for 230 Vac operation. The SIM-2A-02 is a 230 Vac version fitted with NEMA 6-15 connectors. For test applications requiring alternate 115/230V setups, Powertrend offers the model SIM-2A-091, which includes a line voltage autoranging option that automatically sets the internal strapping for either 115/208/230 Volts. Operation The SIM-2A can generate dropouts that have either a high or low source impedance. A high impedance dropout interrupts current to the load under test during preselected periods. A low impedance dropout is one in which the load is shunted during the period of the interrupt to simulate parallel loading. The simulator has an ac monitor jack for viewing the fault waveform on an external oscilloscope. A sync output jack produces a sync pulse for triggering the scope. The fault event can be set to begin at either 0° or 180° with respect to the line voltage zero-cross, and triggering can be advanced up to one-half cycle before the start of the fault. Manual, remote and auto-triggering are standard features on the model SIM-2A. Electrical Specifications for Powerline Disturbance Simulators Models SIM-2A, 5021A & 5021 Recent Upgrades: All models produced after 4/30/99 are suitable for testing light inductive loads without the attendant current surges associated with earlier versions. The Standby Delay range has been changed from 0-10 milliseconds to -0.2 to 9.8 ms. Revised operation manuals offer expanded sections on testing inductive loads. Input Line Voltage: 95-130 Vac or 190-260 Vac, 50/60 Hz single phase. Change the voltage range by changing jumper straps on two interior terminal blocks. For the SIM-2A and 5021A only, you may also purchase an autoranging option that detects the input line voltage range and automatically changes the strapping configuration. External AC Voltage: 0-300 Vac maximum rms input derived from an external transformer connected in phase with the line voltage. Output Disturbances: Line voltage surges (swells), sags (dips) bursts and high/low impedance dropouts. These disturbances are collectively referred to as "transient" events. Load Current: 15 amperes rms maximum for the model SIM-2A and 50 amperes rms maximum for the 5021 and 5021A. Transient Source: ACL- Applies ac line voltage across the load during the selected transient period; EXT- Applies voltage supplied from an external transformer across the load during the transient period; HIZ- Interrupts the load current during the transient period; LOZ- Similar to the HIZ function, but also switches a 2.2 ohm shunt across the load during the transient interval for soft "crowbarring". Standby Source: Same as transient source except the selected source is applied during the standby period. Transient Duration: 0.5 to 499.5 cycles for surges, sags, bursts and low impedance dropouts. The range is 0-500 cycles for high impedance dropouts. Low impedance dropouts occur in integral multiples of one-half cycle. Transient Delay: Add 0-10 ms of turn-on delay following the transition from standby to transient. The dial accuracy is ±3% of full scale. Standby Delay: Add -0.2 to 9.80 ms of turn-on delay following the transient-to-standby transition. The dial accuracy is ±3% of full scale. Transient Angle: Select 0° or 180° transient starting angle with respect to the input line voltage waveform. Trigger Modes: Manual, Remote and Autotriggering. The auto (recurrent) trigger rate is typically adjustable from 0.5 to 60 seconds using the Rate control knob. Sync: Generates a positive sync pulse at the start of each transient. Use the ADV control to advance the sync pulse up to one-half cycle before the start of the transient for optimum scope viewing of the fault waveform. AC Monitor: Provides a 1% output voltage sample for measurement or display. Voltage measurement accuracy is ±3% of reading ± external meter tolerance. DC Monitor: Yields a composite output waveform showing both the standby and transient delay components. Connections: A 25-pin D-subminiature female connector provides remote trigger access. The Sync and Monitor jacks are BNC type UG-1094. Standard versions of the SIM-2A are factory wired for 115 Vac and fitted with NEMA 5-15 connecting devices. Unless otherwise specified, the 5021 is factory wired for 230 Vac and fitted with Hubbell series CS-8200 twist-lock devices. The model 5021A is fitted with terminal blocks. The standard version is shipped factory wired for 115V. All of the above models are field changeable for 115V or 230V service. Accessories: The SIM-2A and 5021 are each furnished with accessory ac power cords. To generate voltage sags and surges, all models require the use of an external transformer, which must be furnished by the user. Adjustable autotransformers are recommended. Options: Autoranging is offered on the SIM-2A and 5021A only. This factory option adds ac voltage threshold detection and relays that automatically switch the transformer primary connections, depending upon the applied line voltage. The low range is 95-140 Vac, and the high range is 175 Vac and above. Protection: The ac line, neutral and external input voltage leads are protected by series connected magnetic circuit breakers. Temperature: 0-40°C maximum ambient temperature range. Dimensions: (H x W x D) SIM-2A: 4.88 x 12.68 x 10.88 in (124 x 322 x 276 mm) 5021A: 6.56 x 16.25 x 14.75 in (167 x 413 x 375 mm) 5021: 6.56 x 16.25 x 16.44 in (167 x 413 x 418 mm) Net weight: SIM-2A: 9 lbs (4.1 kg) 5021A: 17.6 lbs (8 kg) 5021: 19 lbs (8.6 kg) Powertrend, Inc. 1218 E.
